Summary of Policy Statement Issued by the American Heart Association

According to the American Heart Association, the Transcendental Meditation technique is the only meditation practice that has been shown to lower blood pressure.

The AHA's scientific statement* said: "Because of many negative studies or mixed results and a paucity of available trials, all other meditation techniques [including Mindfulness] received a ‘Class III, no benefit, Level of Evidence C' recommendation. Thus, other meditation techniques are not recommended in clinical practice to lower BP at this time."

Reduced rates of death, heart attack and stroke

The AHA scientific statement also reported the finding that lower blood pressure through Transcendental Meditation practice is associated with substantially reduced rates of death, heart attack and stroke.

The AHA scientific statement concludes that alternative treatments that include the Transcendental Meditation technique are recommended for consideration in treatment plans for all individuals with blood pressure greater than 120/80 mm Hg.

Transcendental Meditation is especially effective

Though there are many kinds of relaxation and meditation, it is only Transcendental Meditation – says the American Heart Association – that has been shown to be effective in improving high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease. The practice of Transcendental Meditation has been associated with substantially reduced rates of death, heart attack and stroke too.

A special quality of rest is achieved through Transcendental Meditation, which breaks the cycle of chronic stress. Blood vessels relax and expand, the blood flows more easily, the heart has to beat less hard, and there is less damage to the arteries. The body's self-repair mechanisms are able to restore mind and body a more balanced state.

Anyone can do it

Transcendental Meditation is not controlling or training the mind. It is not trying to be in the now nor is it a change of attitude, belief or value system. 

It's one of the simplest things you will ever do. Children can meditate without difficulty. You don't have to develop a skill. You don't need any aptitude. It's just a matter of creating the conditions for a built-in physiological response to take place.

Reduced blood pressure linked to longer life

A comprehensive analysis of all published randomised control trials on stress reduction among people with high blood pressure found that Transcendental Meditation was the only technique that did significantly reduce blood pressure. A second analysis replicated the finding that both systolic and diastolic components were significantly re duced by Transcendental Meditation.

Researchers have also observed how reduced blood pressure resulting from practice of Transcendental Meditation translates into longer life.

In a controlled study of people over 55 years old and suffering from hypertension, those practising Transcendental Meditation lived more years, in general. Specifically, their rate of mortality due to high blood pressure was decreased by 30%.
